Vulcan’s Game of the Week!

I’m horrible at platform games like Spelunky. I’m too impatient and I die more often than most. But…there’s something about this game that keeps me picking up the controller after I’ve thrown it across the room. Maybe it’s the fact that for once, I can’t memorize the layout of a map nor able to gauge what’s going to happen next. Either way, Spelunky is one of my favorites, so click Read More to find out why!

To start off, Spelunky tests your skill with randomized levels that become more and more challenging as you progress. Each “world” has four levels that you must complete in order to be able to move to the next one unless you  find Tunnel Man, who if given specific items upon his request, can open up a shortcut between worlds. This shortcut allows you to skip the previous world so you don’t have to start the game completely over again and can go to the world where you last left off. Along the way, you’ll encounter various enemies that attempt to deter you from completing your mission (obtaining gold and jewels of course!). Bats, snakes, monkeys, spiders, and even ghosts.

You’ll also have a few items given to you that can help you along the way, the like bombs for blowing up the surrounding area and ropes for getting out of those holes you might fall in. You can also buy these items and others at the shop, like spiked boots and and glue that can make sticky bombs. There are more items than this of course, so check out each shop you find to see what’s there! Just make sure you don’t anger the shop keeper…he’ll chase you down with a shotgun! Not only are there new items, there are also new characters you can unlock too, some of which can be found hidden across various levels.

And who could forget the damsel in distress! Not only do you want to pick up as many jewels as you can, you’ll want to take a chance at saving a pretty lady as well! Finding the damsel, picking her up, and carrying her to the door can give you an extra heart (life) and a kiss! I try to do this as often as possible, since I need all the help I can get! Not only is this game great for perfecting your platform skills, it’s also great for speed runs! Yup…how fast can you get to the door and move to the next level/world? Needless to say, I don’t get very far but I do enjoy this game based on it’s simplicity as well as it’s challenges.
