“Skulls” just got a bit better…

A few weeks ago I was in West Seattle, which is an awesome section of town that has the misfortune of being located on an isolated peninsula that’s basically half-way to Japan. If you ever make it out there, though, it’s incredible. For those 21+, you have the Bembo Room, which is an ancient bar with a full pirate ship deck built into it. It also has a fishtank in the floor, under scratched and almost opaque plexi-glass, that’s home to these creepy survival horror carp. If you’re under 21, the front of the Bembo Room is the all-ages Heartland Cafe, which serves awesome Midwestern comfort food, including the best tater tots in Seattle. Seattle is known for its tots, too, so that’s saying something. If you’re young or have a death-wish, order the biscuits and gravy and ask them to replace the biscuits with tots, “Karen Mitchell style…” Click Read More to continue reading this epic tale…..

West Seattle has a number of other charms, including Bakery Nouveau, which may be the best french bakery in the Pacific Northwest. There’s also Sleepers in Seattle, which sells only sleeper sofas, Easy Street Records, and a fully operational Rock-a-Fire Explosion set up in a vacant storefront. (You’re familiar with Rock-a-Fire Explosion, right? If not, watch this amazing documentary, which is currently free on Hulu!)

Anyway… I was in West Seattle to drop off Jake Kazdall’s hat, which he left when he came over to my side of over the week before to go to Issian, the best isakaya in Seattle. (We also bought a Mentos-dropper and some two liters of Diet Coke, but that’s another story…) Jake, of course,  is the front-man, CEO and creative director of Haunted Temple Studios, which is creating Skulls of the Shogun for Xbox LIVE Arcade, Windows Phone and Windows 8.

Anyway I could only stop by for a second, but I was surpised and delighted when Jake was like “hold on I have a shirt for you…” Being in the game industry means a lot of free shirts, but a Haunted Temple shirt is usually super special. This was no exception, but it was also not a Haunted Temple shirt!

Instead, Jake presented me with a killer 17-bit logo shirt. Including gold ink! And he gave me the news that, as was announced this morning, Haunted Temple Studios is now officially 17-bit Studios.

The logo was first revealed at Pax East in this killer trailer, and we agree that it totally captures the spirit of what Jake and the crew are doing with Skulls — amazing art, classic gameplay, and capturing the spirit of the epic days of teh 16-bit golden age. Just a bit better for modern times. Congrats on the new name/logo guys!
